Kosovo Minister of Justice, Abelard Tahiri, presented on Thursday new Draft Law on criminal code which includes stiffer penalties for some offences.
Tahiri said that when drafting the new Criminal Code they have focused on three main principles: clear determination on the rule of law and fight against organised crime and corruption; greater flexibility in the work of independent rule of law bodies; and protection, promotion and advancing of the human rights notion.
Tahiri said that the new draft includes stiffer penalties when it comes to smuggling, fraud and production of harmful products, as well as re-determination of the criminal offences related to corruption, misuse of official duty or authority, taking/receiving bribes, fraud in office etc. According to Tahiri, these amendments are aimed at preventing corruption of the state officials. Among the changes in the new criminal code, Tahiri mentioned suspension of the senior officials the moment they face an indictment on corruption. “In the new draft law are proposed sanctions banning officials up to ten years from exercising any function in the public administration or any other public post if he/she is found guilty of corruption charges,” Tahiri said.
The Minister of Justice said that they have amended over 100 articles, and in drafting the new Criminal Code were involved members of civil society, international institutions of human rights, and the entire process was transparent and democratic noting that this was one of the most serious projects undertaken by the Ministry of Justice. /GazetaExpress/
