Kosovo President, Hashim Thaci, asked on Wednesday his Albanian counterpart Ilir Meta who is paying an official visit to Pristina, to give Kosovo citizens Albanian citizenship in order to travel without visas.
Thaci said that he talked with the Albanian President Meta that in accordance with the constitutions of both countries to give Kosovo residents Albanian citizenship. He said that currently this is the only way for Kosovars to move freely without visas.
However, Albanian President Meta responded to Thaci’s request explaining that it is not the right solution. “I think that this is not a solution for Kosovo citizens, because fulfillment of the criterion on visa is necessary for the integration of Kosovo into the EU,” Meta said addressing journalists during a joint press conference in Pristina.
The European Union is conditioning Kosovo with the ratification of the Agreement on border demarcation with Montenegro in exchange with visa free regime in the EU Schengen area.
Opposition parties are protesting the disputed agreement on border delineation signed in 2015 with the justification that Kosovo loses more than 8000 hectares of land in the deal. The agreement with Montenegro was signed by Thaci in his capacity as minister of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo. /Express/
