Kosovo President Hashim Thaci adressing media following a meeting with the Albanian President Ilir Meta in Pristina, commented on the move of the British Ambassador, Ruairi O’Connell, who was seen walking out of a conference on Monday while Thaci was delivering a speech.
Thaci was criticizing international community over the war crimes court established to try alleged crimes of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), accusing internationals of not keeping promises after the country established the Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecution Office. Thaci used the meeting with Meta to say that he had neither seen that the Ambassador was present at the conference nor that he walked away while Thaci was talking. "If he walked out as an objection to what I was saying, it is a frustrating, childish, non-diplomatic and irresponsible behaviour," Thaci said about the British ambassador.
Media reported on Monday that the British Ambassador to Kosovo Ruairi O’Connell walked out of the hall while President Hashim Thaci was delivering a speech criticizing international community regarding the Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office (known in Kosovo as Special Court). But the Embassy told KTV TV that the Ambassador had to leave urgently. However, the Embassy opposed the President’s criticism towards international community. “Kosovo has not been promised anything in return to (establishment) the Special Court and it is not fair to claim the opposite. Membership in international organizations is based on the specific membership criteria of individual organizations,” the Embassy said.
